The author discusses some basic notions involved in designing, developing, and implementing the intermediary language for use in a multilingual machine translation system. The objective of the research is timely and should be of interest, as information services in the foreseeable future will demand a good deal of multilinguistic translations. However, the paper is too short and specialized in its focus to serve as an introduction to the topic for the general reader. It is not particularly readable and will not be readily accessible to anyone who does not already have a substantial knowledge of machine translation. In addition, the references are very wide ranging and do not provide a guide to the context within which the author’s work is set. However, the proposed hybrid approach between the usual extremes of selecting either a natural language or an artificial formal language as a metalanguage should be of interest to those already familiar with the author’s area of research.
