Designing database interfaces with DBface
King R., Novak M. ACM Transactions on Information Systems11 (2):105-132,1993.Type:Article
Date Reviewed: Nov 1 1993

The authors describe in some detail a tool for facilitating the construction of special-purpose graphical user interfaces to be used with object-oriented databases. The most interesting aspect of the approach described is that, instead of beginning with a user interface management system (UIMS) and tailoring that system to a database, here a database management system is engineered to make use of UIMS interface building approaches. A particular strong point of this approach lies in the promotion of rapid prototyping of the database and the interface simultaneously in order to support particular applications. The authors do a nice job of motivating the importance of their work, and they offer extensive diagrams and explanations about how the tool functions. The writing style is clear and concise. It will be interesting to see how well this approach succeeds in increasing user productivity. This paper should interest those who want to follow current developments in the design of object-oriented database interfaces, and particularly those who want a detailed description of one such development.
