Green in software engineering
Calero C., Piattini M., Springer Publishing Company, Incorporated, New York, NY, 2015. 327 pp. Type: Book (978-3-319085-80-7)
Date Reviewed: Sep 3 2015

An overview of numerous green aspects of software engineering is provided in this book. It passes through software life-cycle phases and covers relevant topics related to green development from different aspects including economics and quality. The book also proposes specific tools that support green software engineering.

The book consists of five parts refined to 13 chapters. In the introduction, the editors first describe what sustainability and green mean in general and specifically in IT and software engineering. They give an overview of the related concepts from different points of view and by explaining specific terms such as “green software,” “sustainable IS” versus “IS sustainability,” and so on.

The second part of the book, “Environments, Processes and Construction,” presents green software development environments, green processes in software engineering, and green software services construction throughout three corresponding chapters.

Part 3, “Economic and Other Qualities,” describes a model for measuring how well software supports green software engineering techniques. In this part, quality is observed from the viewpoint of “greenability” attributes and trade-offs.

“Software Development Process” then details techniques for incorporating green aspects requirements engineering, design, testing, and maintenance in the software development cycle. In this central and most detailed chapter, the authors again come to the topics related to software quality and measurement, but also take into account ISO standards for software quality.

The last part, “Practical Issues,” deals with decision-making in software engineering, considering green and sustainability aspects. It deals with issues of the application of green aspects.

This is one of the first detailed overviews of green aspects in software engineering. To exploit all of the information provided by the book, good knowledge and practical background in the areas of ICT and software engineering are required. Still, some sections of the book can be used to gain basic knowledge of this area without any trouble. Therefore, it can be recommended to all readers interested in the field regardless of previous knowledge.
