This book claims to “walk you through the awesome features and apps standard on the Mac and the new OS X 10.7 Lion to help you become a true power user. You’ll discover keyboard shortcuts and gestures to help save time.”
Beginning with Finder, many new features of and changes in the Lion operating system (OS) are outlined superficially. It seems that over a third of the page area is taken up with overly large black-and-white screen shots.
The first clue that the content is superficial should have been the word “awesome”--next, the grand claim that the authors are all bloggers at The Unofficial Apple Weblog (http://www.tuaw.com/). This title, already out of date because of the coming release of major changes to OS X, is of interest to only the most inexperienced Mac novice. It explains how to use Time Machine for backup, autosave, and the mail application. Quick coverage of other common applications, such as iCal, Address Book, Preview, and System Preferences, are covered in a manner little better than that of the Mac help system. The final chapter on Lion Server is of little use to anyone with the intention of actually running a server; it should not have been included.
Any reader is better served by alternative titles on the market [1,2].
