Screen Magnifiers: Evolution and Evaluation
Blenkhorn P., Evans G., King A., Kurniawan S., Sutcliffe A. IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications23 (5):54-61,2003.Type:Article
Date Reviewed: Aug 24 2004

Visually impaired computer users have special needs and requirements. This paper discusses screen magnifiers for the visually impaired.

The paper begins with appropriate background information on screen magnifiers, and then proceeds to a more specific discussion of the technical issues of hardware and software. Specific devices, drivers, and operating systems are discussed, as well as their interaction, or lack of interaction. After the technical discussion, the authors discuss their research on how different products were evaluated by visually impaired users. The paper is well organized, and suitable for technical and nontechnical readers.

This paper was useful and informative, covering basic information about screen magnifiers, technical issues, and the results of the study. The authors present solid conclusions, and recommendations on specific types of computer hardware and software for the visually impaired. This paper would be of interest to users of these devices, or to anyone developing hardware and software for the visually impaired.
