The role of computers in mechatronics
Craig K. Computing in Science and Engineering5 (2):80-85,2003.Type:Article
Date Reviewed: Feb 11 2004

This is a brief survey of mechatronics. It provides useful information about the role of computers in mechatronic systems. The author presents his views about the important components of a mechatronic system, investigates the role of computers in the control of electromechanical systems, and describes the skills required to be an engineer in the industry. The author puts a particular emphasis on the fact that all mechanical engineers must become mechatronics engineers, regardless of their area of concentration.

In general, this is an interesting paper, easily read by anyone interested in mechatronic systems, without any particular background other than engineering knowledge. The author seems to have a lot of experience and knowledge in the specific subject.

The paper provides useful information that may interest educators who are teaching mechatronics courses, as well as undergraduates and young engineers. I would recommend it to anyone who designs computer-controlled electromechanical systems.
