Strategic management of technostress: The chaining of Prometheus
Caro D., Sethi A. Journal of Medical Systems9 (5-6):291-304,1985.Type:Article
Date Reviewed: Sep 1 1986

This is a review paper which presents in a well-organized manner the results found in many research projects dealing with stress. The Bibliography contains 65 items. The particular kind of stress dealt with in the paper is that “brought about by the introduction of computer technologies in organizations, which we call technostress.” The authors present a list of factors that cause stress (stressors), classified into five categories. They present a list of factors that tend to mitigate or amplify the effect of the stressors (moderators), classified into four categories. They also list positive and negative manifestations of stress. Then they offer suggestions to management that are designed to control the stressors and the moderators so as to minimize the negative manifestations and maximize the positive manifestations.

The paper should be read by industrial psychologists and human resources personnel. It could also be read by managers of small businesses who are planning to introduce computers into the business.
