Semantic Wikipedia
Völkel M., Krötzsch M., Vrandecic D., Haller H., Studer R.  World Wide Web (Proceedings of the 15th International Conference on the World Wide Web, Edinburgh, Scotland, May 23-26, 2006)585-594.2006.Type:Proceedings
Date Reviewed: Aug 3 2006

This proposal to add formally identified data to Wikipedia correctly suggests the vast amount of data mining that could be done with semantically labeled data. The authors address issues such as the use of numerical units and methods of agreeing on the names of data labels. Will people actually enter large amounts of data? We don’t know yet.

This paper should be read by designers of volunteer or collaborative systems, and would be valuable to those studying cooperative work. Designers can find plans for implementing typed links and similar structures in a way used by others, and those curious about cooperation can judge the work required to label material compared with the benefits. The paper is straightforward and easily readable.
