The MIDI manual
Huber D., Sams, Indianapolis, IN, 1991. Type: Book (9780672227578)
Date Reviewed: Jun 1 1992

Huber is an engineer, author, and professional recording consultant. This second-generation book following the 1983 development of the Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) specification is designed as a reference or textbook. The book is readable even for novices. It contains an index, bibliography, glossary, resource list for continued education, technical description of the MIDI 1.0 specification, and MIDI implementation chart.

Knowledge of MIDI is essential to understanding the production of modern music, and this book ranks in the “must read” category. The book discusses the history, current parameters, and hardware of MIDI as well as MIDI electronic musical instruments, sequencing, editor/librarians, music printing, signal processing, synchronization, digital audio technology, and mixing and automation. It accomplishes its broad-based purpose and contains numerous easily understood figures.

The book informs the reader of the latest industry advances (as of 1990) and the typical hardware available to produce a MIDI system. In this rapidly developing field, it provides a reference point for reader understanding and self-study. While it does not contain specific exercises, it provides enough information about what is possible for the reader to design his or her own projects. This book is well worth the reader’s time and attention.
