Modeling and execution of event stream processing in business processes
Appel S., Kleber P., Frischbier S., Freudenreich T., Buchmann A. Information Systems46 140-156,2014.Type:Article
Date Reviewed: Mar 25 2015

In the world of emerging technologies and an ever-growing number of communication devices provided through the Internet of Things, along with ubiquitous and pervasive computing, the modern business world is faced with many challenges in process management. The authors consider events to be the basic category that plays a vital role in real-time process modeling, and they implement event stream processing units to integrate with business processes. This approach requires analysis of business process modeling and execution, as well as a coherent information technology infrastructure.

Event stream processing is comprised of many real-time data streams that must be accurately captured and managed in a timely fashion. One solution is to encapsulate event stream processing in units as an abstract mechanism consisting of three layers: business process modeling, workflow execution, and information technology infrastructure. In addition to modeling techniques, the authors present a shipment monitoring example through which essential obstacles and challenges are well documented. They conclude the paper with process modeling and execution implementation based on Software AG’s ARIS business process platform for business process analysis, enterprise architecture, governance, risk, and compliance. The authors also correctly state that business process models can describe complex situations where stream processing units support meta-model extensions to provide a basis for functionality of the entire system.

Although there are many real-world deployments of event stream systems in various business models, the literature on event stream integration in business model research is rare. That is why this paper is a valuable contribution to the research on event process management and is recommended reading for anyone coping with new business model research in the Internet of Things and other novel information technology environments.
