Included in many editions of SQL Server, SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) is the member of the family charged with the task of presenting data. This book covers every aspect of SSRS 2012, from a description of its overall architecture, to installation, deployment, and configuration, to everyday use.
Basic topics are explained in the first chapters of the book, with later chapters explaining more advanced aspects. The book can be used as both an introduction to reporting for beginners and a reference for experienced users. Topics include SSRS’s architecture and design; designing efficient queries; laying out reports; implementing dashboards; creating reports and using custom .NET code within them; deploying, managing, and securing reports; business intelligence; and creating reports with Report Builders 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0. All topics are explained on two levels: one with wizards for beginners, and another with more complex code and appropriate screen shots for more experienced users.
The only reference to other sources is a link to the publisher’s Web site (http://www.apress.com/9781430238102), where readers can download all the code used in the book.
This is not a book for beginners. Readers should already be familiar with both programming and database administration. People who work in complex corporate environments will benefit the most from this book. The target audience understands both technical and business issues, and interacts routinely with information and communications technology (ICT) personnel--most notably, database administrators. They are aware that reporting changes over time and are thus able to adapt existing reports to new conditions. This is not an easy assignment, but certainly SSRS 2012, and this book, can make it a little easier.
