This paper presents a solution to the problem of reliable communication among mobile devices used on the battlefield. The starting point for this solution is the existing feature of providing multiple communication channels to battlefield mobile devices; usually, just one channel is used by the application data stream at a time. The authors propose a mechanism for bandwidth aggregation across multiple channels in a mobile environment. It is implemented at the transport layer, as an extension of the stream control transmission protocol (SCTP), and it is called load sharing SCTP (LS-SCTP). The flow control is separated from the congestion control, since the former is performed on a global basis, and the latter on a per path basis. All available paths are used for simultaneous transmission of data chunks. The paper presents a detailed description of the protocol, including messages formats. However, the performance study is rather simplistic for such a complex solution.
