The author describes how Ethernet technology can be used for cooperative computing through the use of highly shareable, specialized computers called compute servers. Applications to the liberal arts, political science, and library automation are discussed.
Although the subject of the paper should be interesting to those involved in computing in higher education, the style of the paper makes for difficult reading. The paper is apparently a transcription of an address given by the author. The resulting conversational style is inappropriate in written form. Particularly intrusive are the frequent references to diagrams the author drew while giving the address but that are not included in the paper.
