Companion apps for information-rich television programmes: representation and interaction
Dowell J., Malacria S., Kim H., Anstead E. Personal and Ubiquitous Computing19 (7):1215-1228,2015.Type:Article
Date Reviewed: Dec 11 2015

The paper describes research on using an app to enhance the value of watching television (TV) programs. Such a companion app (also known as the second screen) has the functions of an extended remote control and also allows for interaction with social media.

The paper has a good section on related work. It shows examples where the second screen enhances the TV program by adding translation context and definitions. Also, the user interacts with the companion app, for example, to get more information from web pages.

The experiment used a scientific TV documentary. The companion app displayed the concept map of the documentary, which is a graph of ideas and how they are linked together. Details of the experiment participants and setting are described, together with numerous results. The app displayed questions for users to test their knowledge. Another experiment measured the time when users looked at the TV and looked at the app.

The conclusion section analyzes interactivity, visual attention, and user experience. The results show that companion apps improve viewer understanding.

This is a good research paper on a subject with great applicability.
