This is an interesting book, and certainly not what I was expecting when I volunteered to review it.
The first three chapters are relatively brief and intended to warm the reader to the topic. As the title of chapter 4 suggests, the reader is introduced to various modern mobile devices (for example, iOS, Android, Windows Phone 8, Nokia Symbian, and BlackBerry) and elements of the user interface (for example, touch gestures and keyboards). It would have been better if the first four chapters were combined into a single introductory one.
Chapter 5 is where the action begins. The author outlines the five criteria that mobile device and app designers should bear in mind: screen sizes, platforms, interactions, designing for apps or the mobile web, and designing for a smartphone or a tablet.
More tips on designing for an enhanced user experience and prototyping on mobile devices are found in chapters 6 and 7. Chapter 8 briefly discusses the advantages and disadvantages of designing for mobile apps or the mobile web.
Chapter 9 summarizes the book, and reminds the reader/designer that it is important to test the design on a large network of (different) devices in order to deliver an optimal user experience.
