Electronic newspaper and its adopters: examining the factors influencing the adoption of electronic newspapers in Taiwan
Li S. Telematics and Informatics20 (1):35-49,2003.Type:Article
Date Reviewed: Jul 24 2003

With government encouragement, the number of Internet users in Taiwan is increasing rapidly, and, as a consequence, electronic newspapers are becoming popular. Some of those established electronic newspapers are becoming successful business cases, such as the China Times Interactive (http://www.chinatimes.com.tw). This paper presents a study of the factors that influence the adoption of electronic newspapers in Taiwan, using the Rogers’ diffusion of innovation model.

Four sets of variables were identified from the literature as having significant effects on the adoption of electronic newspapers in Taiwan. However, the study found that the findings on the three sets of variables--technology ownership, demographics, and mass media--were congruent with those of past adoption studies, while the findings on innovativeness were not. The paper is well organized, and has an appropriate level of detail. However, the paper does not present a significant advance of the state of the art. The paper is particularly recommended to those interested in the explanation and prediction of adoption behaviors, namely communication technology scholars.
