The area of research in question is information science, also called library science. This study received the 1999 Association for Library and Information Science Education research award. It is well done and interesting for two reasons. The first is the use of a research method to measure use of theory in an area of research. The method can be applied in other research areas such as computer science, information systems, and software engineering. The second reason it is interesting is the specific results. The results indicate an increase in explicit use of theory in information science research. Theories cited are those used by researchers in information sciences and social sciences. The authors acknowledge limits for their research, and therefore suggest further theory citation research.
