Communication networks management
Terplan K., Prentice-Hall, Inc., Upper Saddle River, NJ, 1987. Type: Book (9780131530652)
Date Reviewed: Dec 1 1987

This book describes software tools and methodologies for managing networks of IBM systems. The restriction to IBM systems is implicit rather than explicit. The flavor of the book can be expressed in an outline of its chapters:

  • :9N(1) Management of Communication Networks

  • (2) Performance Impacts of Networking Components--This chapter covers modem technology and X.25; compares protocol layers for OSI, SNA, DECNET, and Sperry DCA; and concludes with a weak discussion of network topologies.

  • (3) Performance Indicators, Instrumentation, and Human Aspects of Communication Networks Management

  • (4) Network Technical Control-Oriented Information-Extraction Instruments

  • (5) Network Performance-Control-Oriented, Information-Extraction Instruments--This chapter describes network monitoring for IBM systems.

  • (6) Communication Software for Information Extraction

  • (7) Network-Management Data Base

  • (8) Network-Modeling Instruments

  • (9) Network Operational Control--This is an interesting chapter containing several case studies of network trouble diagnosis for IBM systems.

  • (10) Network Administration

  • (11) Performance Analysis and Tuning

  • (12) Network-Capacity Planning--This is an unsatisfactory chapter: the coverage of ISDN is inadequate, the discussion of LANs is weak, and, in particular, there is no mention of Ethernet.

  • (13) Integrated Communication Network Management

  • (14) Cost Justification of Implementing Network Management

  • (15) Future Trends of Managing Communication Networks

The strong point of the book is that it provides a good working base for some parts of network technology, in particular, good coverage for IBM systems; and it describes commercially available products to help manage IBM networks. Its weak point is its poor coverage of other important networks (e.g., Arpanet, Ethernet); even IBM’s token net is not treated; and there is no coverage of TCP/IP and no coverage of USENET or CSNET. This may be a useful book for IBM proponents, but it is sadly lacking for readers interested in modern communication networks.
