The IEEE 802 standards specify a series of protocols that provide link-level service over Local Area Networks. IEEE 802.2, Logical Link Control, defines link services that can be layered on top of a variety of physical media. The access methods for these media are also specified in tha 802 standards. IEEE 802.3 specifies the CSMA/CD Medium Access Control protocol, 802.4 specifies the Token Bus, and 802.5 specifies the Token Ring. This paper describes each of these standards.
Targeted at a reader with some communications background, the paper gives an overview of each layer. It describes what the p?. kk kc provide, how they work, and the format of the packets exchanged. Enough information is presented to give the reader a good feel for the protocols but not so much that it renders the paper unreadable. The writing is clear and adheres closely to the terminology used by the standards. I believe that this paper would serve as a good means of obtaining an overview of what the standards are before reading the standards themselves.
