The A+ certification
Parks S., Kalman B., McGraw-Hill, Inc., Hightstown, NJ, 1996. Type: Book (9780070485952)
Date Reviewed: Jul 1 1997

A+ certification is a nationally recognized competency credential for microcomputer service technicians. There are no requirements for A+ candidates before they take certification exams, though the exams are geared toward those with at least six months’ experience. There are two tests that must be passed to attain the certification: the Core exam and one of two specialty exams, either the Microsoft Windows/DOS specialty exam or the Macintosh OS-based computers specialty exam.

This book is meant to be a reference on the A+ certification process and a tutorial for the exams. It also includes ideas for using the A+ certification to benefit one’s career. The authors provide an interesting perspective on certification and accreditation in information systems and computer science. They see accreditation and certification as the individual’s responsibility, in contrast with institutional certification and accreditation, in which individual responsibility is shifted to training groups or educators.

The book is made up of six chapters and five appendices. Chapter 1 explains the A+ certification program. Chapter 2 presents a picture of certification as a whole and A+ certification in particular, showing its benefits. Chapter 3 further views the big picture, showing that major employers of computer service technicians need top-quality candidates. Chapter 4 offers specific preparation for the core A+ certification exam. Chapter 5 offers preparatory material for the Microsoft Windows/DOS specialty exam. Chapter 6 does the same for the Macintosh OS-based computers specialty exam. Chapters 4 through 6 include tutorial material and sample exam questions.

The appendices list the A+ Cornerstone Funding Partners and Sponsors; give information on how service centers can earn A+ certification; provide a list of supplementary books, films, and references; list classroom and computer-based training opportunities; present guidelines for using A+ certification and logos; present job profiles of service technicians; and give research results on the value of certification.

The book is readable and organized and contains a comprehensive, detailed index. It is a valuable resource for libraries and career centers.
