From the elementary approach of this book, I would judge that it is used for a course for students taking an associate degree in electrical technology. It is probably geared for a particular course. Unfortunately, there is no statement in the preface, or elsewhere, regarding the intended audience.
The presentation is too elementary for most university courses in either electrical engineering or computer science. It presents examples of procedures for communication between the PC and input/output devices. These procedures, mostly for formatting incoming or outgoing data, are written in both BASIC and C, an unnecessary redundancy. Such exercises should be part of a programming course using the languages.
Some topics covered are date and time of day monitoring, handshaking, A/D and D/A conversion, strobed input, and signal conversion.
While some of the diagrams are helpful for conveying concepts, pictures of the equipment are hardly enlightening. The inclusion of manufacturer’s spec sheets is another redundancy.
