GLIM system release 4 manual
Francis B., Green M. (ed), Payne C. (ed), Clarendon Press, New York, NY, 1993. Type: Book (9780198522317)
Date Reviewed: Jul 1 1994

The Generalized Linear Interactive Modelling (GLIM) language is designed to be used for univariate statistical modeling based on the generalized linear model and provides facilities to design and test statistical models. This manual for version 4 is divided into three major sections: the user guide, the modeling guide, and the reference manual. The user guide introduces the basics of the GLIM language and discusses topics such as data structures, file handling, calculations, data displays, macros, and model fitting. The modeling guide covers statistical modeling, the theory of statistical modeling, and applications of GLIM. The final section, the reference guide, includes information on the GLIM language, data structures, directives, and error handling. Each section contains several chapters written by a variety of authors.

The book is generally good but, like most software documentation, it is dry reading. It contains few typos, although the confusion of the less-than sign with the greater-than sign (p. 637) is particularly noticeable. The index is adequate but, given that this book will frequently be used as a reference manual, could be more detailed. This book will probably interest many users of the GLIM 4 language. With its exclusive focus on the GLIM language, and its price of $93 for the paperback edition, this book is likely to be of very limited interest to statistical modelers who use other packages.
