Mordechai Ben-Menachem is a researcher and adjunct lecturer at Ben-Gurion University, Beer-Sheva, and at Sapir College in Sedarot, both in southern Israel. His professional interests are in the areas of systems engineering, software engineering, and project management. He has been active for more than three decades in these areas, as a practitioner, consultant, lecturer, and researcher. He is an autodidact in these, and other, areas.

He has taught about many systems and software engineering subjects at both undergraduate and graduate levels. These have included introductory courses, as well as more advanced courses on testing, software and system processes, software project management, advanced project management for technology-rich projects, analysis and design, software quality engineering, and verification and validation. He has led many projects both in industry and academia, and has acted as a guide, mentor, and faculty advisor for many graduate students. The aspect of his academic career of which he is proudest is the fact that many hundreds of former students remain in contact with him, and consider him to be both a mentor and friend.

He current research interests are centered around the paradigm of change, which is an overall framework for management of systems and software in an organization, whether these are management systems, control systems, or parts of a product. His professional systems experience has included all types of systems—satellites and airborne systems, insurance and banking, telephony, and groundwater seepage—but his favorite projects have always been those involving very complex and large real-time systems.

His extensive writings include about 15 professional books, and several hundred papers. He also has written fictional works, several books of poetry, and about six books of philosophy. He is a member of the IEEE Computer Society (IEEE-CS), the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), and the Oxford Club, and is also an ordained clergyman. His hobbies include cooking, reading, eclectic music, and wandering around his favorite cities.

Perspectives on defense systems analysis: the what, the why, and the who, but mostly the how of broad defense systems analysis
Delaney W., The MIT Press, Cambridge, MA, 2015. 288 pp.  Type: Book (978-0-262029-35-3)

This book describes the evolution and history of the processes of systems analysis for defense systems, and in this I am somewhat disagreeing with the book’s subtitle. “The how,” if it can be called such, ...

   Code breaking in the Pacific
Donovan P., Mack J., Springer Publishing Company, Incorporated, New York, NY, 2014. 387 pp.  Type: Book (978-3-319082-77-6)

I was excited to review this book, and I was not disappointed; the book is “weird” in a really good way. The publishers classified the book as a computer science book, and, of course, they are not wrong. But it is a...

The green computing book: tackling energy efficiency at large scale
Feng W., CRC Press, Inc., Boca Raton, FL, 2014. 353 pp.  Type: Book (978-1-439819-87-6), Reviews: (1 of 2)

I was excited to get to review this book. After having read and reviewed Green mobile devices and networks [1], this book had me quite interested. I was not disappointed....

Forensic GIS: the role of geospatial technologies for investigating crime and providing evidence
Elmes G., Roedl G., Conley J., Springer International Publishing, New York, NY, 2014. 310 pp.  Type: Book (978-9-401787-56-7)

I accepted the challenge of reviewing this book because I had no real prior knowledge of geographic information systems (GIS) other than anecdotal, and I desired to learn about the field. I found it quite pleasant to read. The editors/...

   Managing complexity
Rzevski G., Skobelev P., WIT Press, Boston, MA, 2014. 216 pp.  Type: Book (978-1-845649-36-4)

This book is truly refreshing. It is probably the finest book of its genre since Rubinstein’s Concepts in problem solving [1]. It examines the entire concept of complex systems in a new and refreshing way, from the sta...

   Evolving software systems
Mens T., Serebrenik A., Cleve A., Springer Publishing Company, Incorporated, New York, NY, 2014. 420 pp.  Type: Book (978-3-642453-97-7)

A compendium of papers about evolving software systems, this book is perhaps the most important one on this subject in the past year, if not decade. The book begins with a dedication to Manny (Meir) Lehman. I am honored to add my salut...

Stowell F., Welch C., Wiley Publishing, Chichester, UK, 2012. 266 pp.  Type: Book (978-1-118345-63-4)

This relatively short book plows no new ground and makes no significant scientific contribution, but contains a wealth of nuggets of wisdom and a nice surprise. The authors discuss the concept of systems, from both a technological and ...

Venkataraman H., Muntean G., CRC Press, Inc., Boca Raton, FL, 2012. 401 pp.  Type: Book (978-1-439859-89-6)

This is a useful and well-constructed book despite its slightly unfortunate title. It is not about being green, but about the responsible design of software and hardware in mobile devices. The book consists of individual papers by an a...

Keller E., Manning Publications Co., Greenwich, CT, 2004.  Type: Book (9781932394139), Reviews: (2 of 2)

Using an enormous quantity of examples and anecdotes, this book describes the author’s experiences consulting for major corporations on information systems (usually, but not exclusively, enterprise resource planning (ERP)). T...
