| | Wayne Summers started as an undergraduate at General Motors Institute studying mechanical engineering. After realizing that working as an engineer was not for him, he transferred to The Ohio State University where he majored in astronomy for a year before settling on mathematics. After serving for four years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Malaysia, Wayne returned to his studies of mathematics at St. Louis University where he received his M.S. and Ph.D. During his last semester as a graduate teaching assistant, Wayne was asked to teach a course in computer programming. Wayne had discovered his calling and has been teaching computer science ever since. He wrote his dissertation in computer science in the area of compiler writing.
Wayne's first experience teaching was as a Peace Corps Volunteer where he was asked to teach secondary school mathematics and science in the Malay language as well as math, science and even English. After completing his graduate work at St. Louis University, Wayne taught for six years at Southeast Missouri State University. While there, he had an opportunity to return to Malaysia with his family to teach for the Indiana University - MUCIA Program where he taught computer science as well as being coordinator of the Computer Science Department and the Special Assistant to the Provost. He is proud of his role in mentoring several Malaysian faculty who assumed responsibility for the department. After five years in Malaysia, Wayne returned to the U.S. to teach in the Computer Science Department at New Mexico Highlands University where he developed several courses in computer networking and assisted in the development of an interdisciplinary graduate program in Media Arts and Computer Science. During the eight years Wayne has taught at NMHU, he has served as chairperson of the combined math and computer science department for the last four. During two years of his tenure at New Mexico Highlands University, Wayne also assumed a joint appointment as a faculty member of MIS in the School of Business. Wayne received a sabbatical in Fall 2000, which allowed him to teach for a semester at University of Waikato in Hamilton, New Zealand. Wayne has recently assumed the position of Distinguished Department Chairperson and Professor of Computer Science at Columbus State University.
Wayne is proud of the over 5000 student who have taken his classes during the past 28 years. In addition to teaching, Wayne has been fortunate to have an opportunity to work with colleagues in workshops and seminars he has conducted around the world. For the past six years, Wayne has been a Course Director for the NSF Chautaugua Faculty Development Program.
Wayne has written a book Computer Viruses What They Are and How to Prevent Them which he coauthored with two Malaysian colleagues. He has published articles on a variety of different areas in computer science in a variety of different venues. He recently finished a chapter for a book on computer networking and will be conducting a workshop on computer security. When he is not busy with academics, Wayne spends time with his Malaysian wife and their three children. Wayne enjoys travel, reading science fiction and thrillers, and attending theater and musical performances and playing badminton. |
