Srini Ramaswamy

Srini Ramaswamy currently serves as the Global R&D Project Manager, Engineering at ABB Power Generation, overseeing global product development for the Symphony Plus system. He is responsible for the complete product life cycle, including definition, development, market introduction, market penetration, and phase-out. In addition, he is responsible for the identification of R&D proposals and priorities to sustain and improve the business, as well as making strategic technology decisions and determining operative targets of the program, with development spread across four locations worldwide. Prior to this position, he served as the Global Lead for Software Tools Development and Services for the Software Development Improvement Program (SDIP) at ABB; headed the industrial software systems research group at ABB’s India Corporate Research Center (CRC); and headed the tools and support services group for ABB’s India Development Center (IDC) in Bangalore, India. On the academic front, he serves as a visiting professor at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, and was an honorary adjunct professor at the International Institute of Information Technology – Bangalore. Additionally, he serves as the Associate Director for the Australia-India Center for Automation Software Engineering, a $3M industry-university-government partnership focused on software systems research. His research interests are in systems engineering, intelligent and flexible control, behavior modeling, analysis and simulation, empirical software systems research, and software stability and scalability—particularly in the design and development of complex software systems.

Previously, he was in academia for 16 years, most recently as professor and chairperson of the Computer Science Department at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR). At UALR, he was associated with several active program-building and research initiatives, including the development of an applied PhD program in integrated computing. He served as the statewide program manager for the National Science Foundation-sponsored Wireless Nano-sensors and Systems (WiNS) center (2007-2009), was one of the primary drivers for a state-wide high-performance computing initiative, co-founded UALR’s National Security Agency Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education, and served as the principle investigator and coordinator for an international collaborative effort on engineering innovative software systems for marine transportation logistics with the National Institute of Applied Sciences (INSA) in Rouen, France. At UALR, he also initiated a very successful pipeline development program, the High School Research Program (HSRP), bringing talented high school students to campus and engaging them through an on-campus three-week STEM-related research experience and proactive mentorship with faculty-student groups across various science and engineering disciplines. Prior to his work at UALR, he served as chairperson of the Computer Science Department at Tennessee Tech (TTU), where he established the nation’s first, unique and highly successful graduate program in Internet computing and developed sustainable collaborative relationships with both the engineering and medical programs at Vanderbilt University. At TTU, he also established the Software Automation and Intelligence Laboratory (SAIL), a facility with a focus on team-based software research and development to serve local and regional industries. Additionally, he has held several invited visiting appointments: at INSA de Rouen, France, at the Institute of Software Integrated Systems (ISIS) at Vanderbilt University, and at the University of Texas at Austin.

Ramaswamy has also been a successful software entrepreneur. His company, Resilient Systems, LLC, was a customized software development and managed outsourcing company. From a business perspective, his interests are in the design, development, and delivery of large-scale software systems, ensuring timely planning, coordination, execution, and alignment of a set of sub-services while understanding issues of prioritization, perception, and performance in order to deliver value-added services to address specific business needs. For INRAD, he actively consulted on a National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) sponsored advanced technology project on intelligent document analysis for aligning timely research with the business needs of organizations using technology roadmaps. He also served widely as an expert witness on global software development, outsourcing, and database and algorithmic design for arbitrations and litigations. He served on the board of several start-up software companies in the US and India. Ramaswamy has over 200 publications, including 170-plus peer-reviewed publications (35-plus journals), 50-plus selected reviews in ACM Computing Reviews, four book chapters, and five patent filings. He has actively advised and participated in 12 PhD dissertations and more than 50 MS student works in computer science, applied sciences, electrical and computer engineering, industrial and manufacturing engineering, and information systems. He has a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

On the professional front, Ramaswamy served as the vice-chair of the IEEE Computer Society India Council (2012-2013), the ExCom committee member of the IEEE Bangalore Chapter (2011-current), and a 2013 IEEE Computer Society alternate representative to the Computing Sciences Accreditation Board. He was a commissioner in the CAC commission (2009-2013) of ABET and is now a member of its ExCom. He is a senior member of the IEEE, a senior member of the ACM, and a life member of the India Science Congress Association. He also served as an active volunteer for the IEEE CS Educational Activities board’s http://trycompting.org website. He is an active member of the IEEE SMCS Technical Committee on Distributed Intelligent Systems and served as an associate editor (2008-2012) for IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man and Cybernetics, Part C: Applications and Reviews.
