As the authors state, “smart city applications in healthcare, transportation, utility, safety, and environmental health” are likely to benefit from machine intelligence and Internet of Things (IoT) technology. In this survey article on smart city system design they divide smart city infrastructure into “application, sensing, communication, security, and data planes,” emphasizing the data plane as the anchor of computing and data storage.

The beginning of the article sets the pace with an impressive diagrammatic abstraction of the five smart city architecture planes: application plane, sensing plane, communication plane, data plane, and security plane. A portion of the article looks at “trends in the implementation of the data plane” and highlights the “algorithmic building blocks for data plane services.” The authors look into integrating machine intelligence via data analytics, machine learning, and deep learning components.

The article discusses open issues and challenges, and offers a helpful survey of machine intelligence for smart cities.
