While open and distance learning generates huge revenues for educational institutions in more developed nations, it is quite interesting to know that this phenomenon is also catching on in developing countries like India. Distance learning can cut through cultures, nations, and many times parts of a nation. It also sometimes creates a safe and convenient learning environment. In the US, Arizona State University, Harvard University, and many other leading educational institutions have been actively involved in providing distance education to students all over the world.

This edited book collects some excellent work in the area of distance education, based on experiences in developing countries, and illustrates some ideas for improving efficiency. It is a collection of research and experiences from a group of Indian researchers. Much of the research focuses on different tools and technologies that can be used for the purpose of distance education. While a few amenities, like Internet connection availability, are more prevalent in developed countries, this may not be the case in a country like India.

The book also briefly illustrates how distance education is delivered in places like the United Kingdom (UK) and US. It delineates the fact that developing countries like India are catching up in this area of education. Television channels that focus on education are a big help in this direction. The book also provides information on the role of distance education in improving the economy. It includes a case study on Mauritius and Cyprus and how technology integration for distance learning has helped these countries in a big way.

Overall, this is a very good book and a must-read for researchers and educators working in distance education. I hope to see a second edition.
