Pagano A., Liotine M., ELSEVIER, Cambridge, MA, 2020. 220 pp. Type: Book (978-1-281595-61-4)
Date Reviewed: Jul 14 2021

Technology in supply chain management and logistics is focused on the involvement of new technologies within supply chain management (SCM) and logistics. It presents a detailed analysis of their implications.

The book consists of ten chapters, with each chapter having its own bibliography. Chapter 1, an introduction, presents the main objectives and the structure of the book. Chapter 2 emphasizes the impact of new trends in society and business (mobile computing, social media, and so on) on SCM. The authors present and describe a set of technologies that have been divided into four categories, including blockchain, big data, cloud computing, Internet of Things (IoT), machine learning, robotics, and so on.

Chapter 3 provides a literature survey concerning the impact of the exponential technologies on global SCM. The authors also focus on barriers, challenges, and current limitations due to a lack of understanding the technologies. Chapter 4 is dedicated to the integration of the blockchain technology within supply chain operations. It also points out the advantages of using this technology. Chapter 5 describes a set of technologies able to deal with the errors that might occur within supply chain planning.

Chapter 6 is dedicated to healthcare supply chain management, which must consider new strategies in the supply chain due to changes within the healthcare system. The advantages of using the emerging technologies are presented. Chapter 7 deals with cold chain environments. It presents the novel concept of containers and “the impact of these new containers on [the] cold chain.”

Chapter 8 describes “guiding principles for driving digital technology,” used to deal with the increasing complexity encountered nowadays within supply chains. Novel technologies such as IoT, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, blockchain, cloud computing, and so on may lead to radical changes to supply chain operating systems.

Chapter 9 presents five case studies of companies that used and implemented different supply technologies. The integration of the novel technologies was beneficial for the companies and led to healthy supply chains. Finally, Chapter 10 presents top supply chain technology trends for the year 2018, and points out some ideas about how the future of supply chain could look.
