The Internet of Things (IoT) is becoming a cornerstone technology that is being used for affordable enhancement in the healthcare sector. Using IoT-enabled medical applications today shows promise for offering better healthcare services as well as delivering personalized care services to people.

Personalized care is based on patient-centricity combined with patient-centered information and care. Both terms are used by the authors. Patient-centricity relies more on data emanated from the patient through modern technologies like a wireless body area network (WBAN), a type of wireless sensor network (WSN), which is in turn part of the IoT. In contrast, patient-centered care is based on a patient’s needs and information provided by him and his caregivers.

This paper presents an exhaustive and comprehensive literature review on IoT-enabled personalized health systems. It is well structured and easy to follow, so even readers with little background in IoT can follow and understand it.

The authors describe what an IoT-enabled personalized health system (PHS) is and discuss its components by means of various IoT-based healthcare systems. Section 5 discusses open issues and future trends in the further implementation of PHS and is very interesting.

I personally appreciate the authors’ writing style, the technical level, and the way they make the paper easy for readers to understand.

This paper presents numerous strengths including an exhaustive and comprehensive literature review. The authors refer to 133 recent reference articles and 24 types of literature for further reading. Researchers with a good background in snowball approach-based research methodology could use these references to find other literature on PHS and related themes. The authors also present and discuss open issues.

I recommend this paper to researchers working on IoT-enabled medical applications.
