C++ how to program (10th ed.)
Deitel P., Deitel H., Pearson, New York, NY, 2016. 1080 pp. Type: Book (978-0-134448-23-7)
Date Reviewed: Jun 13 2017

This C++ book is detailed and comprehensive. Initially, an introduction to computer science is provided to warm up readers. C++ fundamentals are covered in great detail in what can be viewed as a primer-level introduction. The book’s real-life examples will help students understand the concepts well. There are many examples for classes, objects, inheritance, and polymorphism. Each of these important concepts is covered in a separate chapter. Many of the C++ concepts, like standard library containers, iterators, and algorithms, are dealt with in an in-depth fashion. For any software developer or testing engineer, debugging is key. The authors have gone to great lengths to explain this subject with case studies on GNU gdb, Xcode, and Visual C++.

One of the ways the book shines is in its approach to algorithm development. Concepts are explained and necessary constructs usage is described including control statements, functions, recursion, array vectors, and file processing. Searching and sorting algorithms and the corresponding C++ programs get separate consideration and great explanations. This book is certainly geared toward students in undergraduate- and master’s-level coursework, as well as industry professionals.

The book is not trivial; it takes hours of practice to become an expert-level programmer. Having a tool like this book will guide one to become an expert. Readers should have a computer, a C++ compiler, and this book at hand. Hacking away at reading and solving the problems mentioned in the book seems to be a sure way to success. The book is heavy, both literally and figuratively. As there is no substitute for hard work, my recommendation is to set aside one year to pursue this book with the hope of achieving a master status in C++ programming.
