Recent progress in brain and cognitive engineering
Lee S., Bülthoff H., Müller K., Springer Publishing Company, Incorporated, New York, NY, 2015. 213 pp. Type: Book (978-9-401772-38-9)
Date Reviewed: Mar 1 2016

Forty researchers contributed to this book, part of Springer’s “Trends in the Augmentation of Human Performance” series. Fourteen chapters provide examples of cutting-edge research in understanding high-order information processing by the brain and how the brain may create artificial systems that interact with the real world. Advanced researchers will find helpful directions in these studies.

It consists of four parts: “Non-invasive Brain-Computer Interface,” “Cognitive and Neural–Rehabilitation Engineering,” “Big Data Neurocomputing,” and “Early Diagnosis and Prediction of Neural Diseases.” Much of this research has the potential for interesting broad-based applications. For example, researchers studied a brain-computer braking interface for vehicles. Others considered a neural microchip implant to aid in the treatment of brain degenerative diseases. Still others studied facial recognition, head injuries, and deep learning in the diagnosis of brain disorders.

Each standalone chapter has an abstract at the beginning and list of references at the end. However, there is no comprehensive index for the entire book. This weakness aside, reviewing what others are doing may well invigorate the active researcher in this unfolding field.
