Flash : building the interactive web
Salter A., Murray J., The MIT Press, Cambridge, MA, 2014. 192 pp. Type: Book (978-0-262028-02-8)
Date Reviewed: Feb 6 2015

Many websites and games featuring Adobe Flash have been developed and played by a huge number of users. Adobe Flash has become a success, thanks to the adoption of YouTube of Adobe Flash video. However, Apple’s and Google’s decisions to refuse the use of Adobe Flash in the iOS and Android arenas almost caused the door to mobile for Adobe Flash to come to a close. Later, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) consortium standardized HTML 5, which many developers have shifted to, ultimately reducing the dominance of Adobe Flash on the web. Nevertheless, some websites, especially those that host Flash games, still use Adobe Flash.

Salter and Murray explore Adobe Flash from different angles, ranging from history to creativity. The book consists of seven chapters. In chapter 1, the authors give an overview of Adobe Flash and how it has been adopted by the community by browsing the history of the software and its different versions. The next chapters take the reader into the details regarding animation, how the programmer deals with its scripting language ActionScript and its different versions, and the arcade and its well-designed and developed games. The remaining chapters deal with the art and how Adobe Flash has captured artists, the dilemma regarding free and open software, and finally the future of Adobe Flash. All of the book’s chapters are well written.

I have been teaching Adobe Flash since Flash 8 came out. This book will be valuable to readers since it will teach them everything about Adobe Flash, from the cultural point of view to the actual problem of how to keep the software alive for many years. I sincerely recommend this valuable book, which I am planning to use as a reference in my course.
