E-tutorial support for collaborative online learning: an explorative study on experienced and inexperienced e-tutors
Kopp B., Matteucci M., Tomasetto C. Computers & Education58 (1):12-20,2012.Type:Article
Date Reviewed: Feb 1 2012

Virtual learning continues to develop and expand into all educational environments, offering students a genuine learning experience. This paper focuses on the e-tutor’s impact on the learning outcomes of students engaged in collaborative online learning. The research examines the level of support e-tutors provide to students undertaking collaborative tasks in a virtual learning course. The study evaluated 78 online course e-tutors from 17 European countries; a questionnaire collected general information and data on collaborative and social activities.

The analysis revealed that e-tutors were clustered into one of two groups: experienced online tutors who provided specific guidance and feedback to students, and novice online tutors who lacked the necessary skills to recognize specific virtual classroom situations. This study confirms findings from previous research on successful relationships between students and teachers. It should be of significance to administrators and educators working in the online environment.

In conclusion, there is a valid argument to provide e-tutors with suitable online education training: it will enhance the students’ learning experiences. Furthermore, the authors recommend additional research on e-tutor online behavior and performance.
