Seeing data : designing user interfaces for database systems using .NET
Riordan R., Pearson Education, 2004. Type: Book (9780321205612)
Date Reviewed: Dec 3 2004

Riordan introduced us to ActiveX Data Objects (ADO) .NET [1]. She now gives us this beautifully titled book about the design of user interfaces using .NET.

In Part 1, Riordan briefly looks at the principles of interface design, and then proceeds very rapidly to the basic objects in the .NET framework: graphic objects, typography, color, and images. The next two parts are dedicated to the representation within .NET of the entities and attributes of the database schema. Part 4 describes the interaction with the user, and contains these chapters: “Managing Data Display,” “Command Widgets,” “User Assistance,” “Database Integrity,” “Sorting, Searching, and Filtering,” and “Reporting.” The author concludes with a part about the user interface from the perspective of the application itself. It contains a more general chapter about interface architecture, and then tackles user customization and installation questions, again within the .NET framework.

Downloadable code for almost every chapter is available on the publisher’s Web site; this is a very valuable data source. The examples are in Visual Basic (VB), as they are in the book, along with their C# equivalents. The book contains a glossary and index, but no bibliography.

For this book to be useful, the reader has to have used .NET in her or his daily work. This is not a theoretical work, but rather a handbook for the practitioner.
