Trends and issues in establishing interoperability among knowledge organization systems
Zeng M., Chan L. Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology55 (5):377-395,2004.Type:Article
Date Reviewed: Jun 18 2004

The authors describe knowledge organization systems (KOS), at least for the purposes of their report, as “KOS used with online bibliographic databases, online-accessible library collections, Web-based subject directories or gateways, and digital libraries.” Interoperability, they claim, has been defined as “the ability of two or more systems or components to exchange information and use the exchanged information without special effort on the part of either system.”

Eighteen current projects, from all over the western world, were analyzed for various interoperability capabilities. The authors conclude, not unexpectedly, that the “interoperability of KOS is an unavoidable issue in today’s networked environment.” Other, more detailed, conclusions are given, all of which imply that further work needs to be done. Various means of achieving interoperability are discussed in the text. These are all from the viewpoint of the professional librarian, but were apparently deemed the most useful by the authors.

Nearly two pages of references are provided after the main text, and this, in turn, is followed by an appendix that offers a summary of the purpose and status of each of the projects that were studied. Finally, there is an appendix of acronyms and abbreviations.

The paper is well constructed, and presents a good status report on the projects that were studied. It will be of primary interest to librarians, but might also be of interest to those involved in information retrieval or database management.
