Developing a portal channel strategy
Watkins J. In Designing portals. Hershey, PA,  Idea Group Publishing,  2003. Type:Book Chapter
Date Reviewed: Oct 10 2003

The use of Web portals in higher education is increasing in popularity. There are, however, a number of issues that arise when planning and implementing an information Web portal. This chapter contains information on portal channel strategy, and covers a range of subjects from content to technical issues. The author discusses the processes of determining content and selecting channels, some technical issues, and future trends.

Watkins seeks to provide guidance to those seeking to create a successful portal channel development strategy, and succeeds in his purpose. The discussion is helpful, and will be of interest to anyone planning a portal, but its focus shifts between strategy and technical issues. The author’s discussion of the early process of determining content and channels is good, but the text falls short when discussing implementation; implementation issues are also important in content and channel selection. The references provided are relevant, and are good sources for information. Additional references on portal strategy would have been helpful.

Overall, the chapter was informational, and was presented in an easy-to-follow manner. The topics were broken down into logical categories, and identified potential benefits and problems for portal developers. The suggestions made by the author are appropriate, and will benefit institutions seeking to plan these types of strategies. Readers will benefit from some previous familiarity with Web portals, and some knowledge of basic Web terminology.
