Learn HTML on the Macintosh
Lawrence D., Mark D., Addison Wesley Longman Publishing Co., Inc., Redwood City, CA, 1996. Type: Book (9780201887938)
Date Reviewed: Feb 1 1997

The authors explain how to publish pages on the World Wide Web using tools available for the Macintosh computer. A user with minimal Macintosh knowledge is introduced to the HyperText Markup Language (HTML) and taken through the steps necessary to create a Web site. The book includes a CD-ROM with useful Web tools and example HTML pages.

The book is wedded to the Macintosh and a specific set of tools available for this platform. Text editing is illustrated using the BBEdit Lite text editor (provided on the CD-ROM), and a free 30-day trial with an Internet service provider is offered via DIGEX. For a Macintosh user who does not mind being channeled down a specific path, this is a good way to get started as a Webmaster.

The authors’ style is informal, but the presentation, like that of a reference manual, moves linearly through HTML constructs, rather than graduating from the simple to the complex. A lot of nonessential detail up front may confuse HTML novices, although all of the essential information is eventually covered. The strong portions of the book are the advanced chapters on image maps, tables, sound, video, and frames.

Missing from the book are two reference lists that would be helpful: the contents of the CD-ROM, and the set of HTTP character codes (for example, space=%20) that are needed to form uniform resource locator (URL) tags. Otherwise, the material is fairly complete for both HTML 2.0 and the proposed 3.0 extensions.

The CD-ROM contains 27 megabytes of files in three folders: “Authoring,” “Goodies,” and “Helpers.” The Authoring folder has the sample Web pages discussed in the book. The other two folders have various freeware and shareware Macintosh applications, including clip2gif, Drop-PS, DropStuff, Fetch, FlattenMooV, JPEGView, MacBinary II+, SoundApp, SoundMachine, StuffIt Expander, and Transparency. All of the application programs that I checked were current as of November 1996.
