Cloud networking :understanding cloud-based data center networks

As stated by the author in chapter 1, this book is not meant to be overly technical, but rather an easy-to-read overview on cloud networking. It fulfills this goal. It is not recommended for professionals as it lacks technical depth. It is well suited for people with a limited technical background who are interested in getting an overview of how cloud networks operate.

The book is well structured, clearly describing the goals and summarizing the concepts in each chapter. From a technical point of view, cloud concepts are vaguely described and do not reflect the most recent terminology and technology.

Aspects such as cloud federations, data as a service (anything as a service), and cost models are not mentioned at all. The move to the cloud is not very clearly motivated. In general, the motivation is scattered throughout the book.

Another weakness that is likely to annoy readers is a pervasive lack of concrete examples or scenarios of existing clouds. Meanwhile, different concrete clouds do exist that build up the basis for a range of different services. Each of the concepts and technologies described in the book can be attached to a concrete cloud or a cloud service. Such a link would prove the timeliness of the concepts and technologies to the reader.

Putting this criticism aside, the book provides a good overview of the cloud behind the scenes, and is written in non-technical language that makes it easily understandable by non-technical readers.
