The author describes a Machine Translation (MT) system, SPANAM, developed by the Pan American Health Organization, which requires postediting of the system’s output by a human. In production MT systems, postediting is a common event that makes up for the inadequacies of the program’s translation abilities. This paper discusses postediting strategies for situations in which the target language requires an explicit subject that is merely implicit in the source text. The examples involve translation from Spanish to English.
