How computers make books: from graphics rendering, search algorithms, and functional programming to indexing and typesetting
Whitington J., O’Reilly Media, Inc., Sebastopol, CA, 2024. 176 pp. Type: Book (9781638354383)
Date Reviewed: Jul 9 2024

While the book’s main title sounds somehow suggestive, its subtitle--from graphics rendering, search algorithms, and functional programming to indexing and typesetting--explains the core concepts presented. Whitington introduces the subject matter in a perfectly proficient way--simply, gently, and step-by-step--including all the related aspects, meaning it provides readers with comprehensive knowledge about the entire process of digital text production. Color, image rendering, shades of grey, functional programming language supported with easy-to-follow numeric examples, typesetting, formatting styles, and producing the final ebook are covered.

But this is not all. Before introducing the core concepts, Whitington discusses some historic approaches to help readers better understand how it all started and then compares that knowledge to the present state of the art. Those who find it difficult to understand image processing algorithms will be delighted to see how easy it can be to follow the included examples. The table of contents is presented in two forms: both overall and each chapter separately in adequate detail.

The book encourages readers to follow the methods presented. Another advantage is the structure, as each chapter has a brief list of the topics at the beginning and tasks at the end, making it a great resource for academics using it in a course. I am excited to use the labs with my students, and my impression is that they will be eager to follow the text’s proposed activities.
