IoT for sustainable smart cities and society
Rodrigues J., Agarwal P., Khanna K., Springer International Publishing, Cham, Switzerland, 2022. 338 pp. Type: Book (303089553X)
Date Reviewed: Feb 28 2023

Before reading this review, take two minutes to reflect upon the following questions:

(1) Can we learn to make the world a better place?
(2) Are there examples of people doing so?
(3) Can we move toward a future where everyone protects the global commons?
(4) Is there transformative smart cities research to consider?
(5) Is the Internet of Things (IoT) a key technology for behavior change?

IoT for sustainable smart cities and society joins a growing body of knowledge that provides fresh insights and innovation to address these initial questions and more [1,2,3,4,5,6]. It consists of 14 chapters, with research and case studies on IoT and related technologies applied to real-world problems. A preface provides a gentle introduction to each. The book concludes with an index.

Chapter 1 explores and explains machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) for IoT-powered smart cities. It begins with a simplified but useful model of the components of a smart city. The six components are smart home, smart agriculture, smart environment, smart surveillance, smart healthcare, and smart transportation. The authors contend that “perhaps the greatest test confronting huge urban areas is discovering approaches to improve traffic.”

The other chapters also take a deep dive into the utilization of IoT and other technologies to address specific applications that make a city smarter. The title of chapter 14 alone--“Efficacy of Bio-Absorbent Concept in Textile Effluent Treatment Technology Using Low-Cost Materials by Implementing Banana Bark and Orange Peel”--should nudge you to read this book.

Readers interested in policy and planning for a country to move toward a human-centered smart society, called Society 5.0 in Japan, should read [7].
