Over the years, the exchange of data over networks has been on the rise. With advancements in mobile technologies and applications, this is only going to increase. Modern data centers store, process, and distribute huge amounts of data, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Data centers are mainly concerned with performance, energy efficiency, and security. Hence, the solutions proposed to enhance the functionality of data centers must assure integrity and efficiency (in terms of both processing and energy).

To increase the efficiency of these data centers, one proposal is to incorporate hardware accelerators into data centers. In computing, hardware accelerators have been used to speed up the operations and make them more efficient. Hardware accelerators in data centers, edited by Christoforos Kachris, Babak Falsafi, and Dimitrios Soudris, presents solutions aimed at enhancing the operation of data centers with the help of hardware accelerators.

In general, this book covers solutions for integrating programmable resources into data centers and cloud and edge infrastructures. Most of the proposed solutions use field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) to enhance performance and efficiency. The variety of solutions presented concentrate on energy efficiency as a prime requirement when using hardware accelerators for data centers, while a few solutions integrate cyber physical systems into the cloud data centers.

The presented research includes discussions of the advantages, limitations, and scope of the proposed solutions. The references given at the end of every chapter offer scope for further reading. The presented work will enlighten readers about the ongoing research, tools and platforms used, available solutions, limitations, and underlying challenges; interested readers can use it to build their own research.
