Mobile big data : a roadmap from models to technologies
Skourletopoulos G., Mastorakis G., Mavromoustakis C., Dobre C., Pallis E., Springer International Publishing, New York, NY, 2018. 347 pp. Type: Book (978-3-319679-24-2)
Date Reviewed: May 31 2019

Part of Springer’s “Lecture Notes on Data Engineering and Communications Technologies” series, this edited book is divided into four parts. The editors have chosen 13 different topics (chapters) related to big data.

Note that there are only general references to the benefits of using big data, but no source that actually uses big data. Here are some examples from the first three parts. In chapter 4, the authors refer to the concept of a cloudlet and thoroughly describe the cloudlet system. Chapter 6, “Mobile Big Data in Vehicular Networks,” deals primarily with equipment from a single manufacturer and communication ranging from wired within the vehicle to communication outside using wireless. Some of the communication deals with cloud storage. Chapter 8 deals with the impact of electromagnetic interference in data-intensive applications, and chapter 10 deals with energy-aware issues in big data.

Part 4 deals with the use of big data in Australia, Greece, and India. Its three chapters deal with applications of big data. In chapter 11, the applications are related to retail, information technology (IT), education, oil and gas, and healthcare. Chapter 12 is fully focused on a mobile medical application. Chapter 13 covers “Social Networking in Higher Education in India,” especially its impact on students looking for employment. Even though this chapter covers a big data application, it is based on a small survey.

Each chapter includes plenty of color figures and several well-organized tables. The content is very mathematical; some chapters are very much geared toward specialists, because of the amount of equations used. Overall, it is a good book on a variety of topics related to mobile big data. It will be useful for researchers in the field.
