Business process management cases : digital innovation and business transformation in practice
vom Brocke J., Mendling J., Springer International Publishing, New York, NY, 2018. 610 pp. Type: Book (978-3-319583-06-8)
Date Reviewed: Jul 12 2018

As the title promises, this book contains case descriptions and case studies. The introductory chapter tries to provide a framework and editorial guidelines for describing cases from business process management (BPM) and modeling perspectives, expounding the properties of each case study. The case studies originated from 19 business sectors, and they are categorized by the core elements of BPM, namely strategic alignment, governance, methods, information technology (IT), people, and culture.

Because of space constraints, this review cannot analyze the individual chapters in detail. The book’ four parts (31 chapters) contain heterogeneous chapters within the comprehensive topic, thereby some examples from each part are included.

Part 1 concentrates on the organizational engineering side and compliance issues. It is interesting to see how paper-based, document-centric business processes can be transformed into electronic document-oriented business processes exploiting the BPM approach. One chapter deals with this issue using SAP and presents a systematic methodology.

Part 2 treats method problems. One chapter presents a case study for the application of design thinking for process reengineering. It is interesting to see how this fashionable method--basically a version of brainstorming--is used in the context of BPM, that is, a method for creative idea generation and team collaboration with process modeling aimed at IT implementation.

Another intriguing chapter is about the use of process mining in the case of a BPM modeling tool, namely ARIS, to improve the framework’s usability. Utilizing the digitally available data in the form of various log formats, the disciplined application of process mining produces useful results for ARIS developers.

The third part, “Information Technology,” includes a chapter about electric vehicle (EV)-related problems that can be handled or eased via a suitable business process solution, for example, how to efficiently and effectively organize charging points in the sharing economy. The chapter concludes with a proposal for a quite generic process model that may be used for crowd sourcing and sharing economy solutions to speed up the proliferation of EVs.

Part 4 tackles the domain of “People and Culture.” A representative chapter of this part involves the organizational culture of Brazil’s Court of Accounts. It discusses personal and organizational behavior in this context. The experiences and conclusions do not contain anything new; rather, it is a study on bureaucratic organization and the opportunities for process improvement through BPM with the assistance of an IT toolset.

The book attempts to give a unified descriptive framework of case studies, for example, each chapter provides a summary in the form of “lessons learned.” However, enforcing the design science research paradigm and case study approach in software engineering and information systems may have provided a more scientific frame for analysis [1,2].

The book is a useful and comprehensive summary of several real-life case studies for organizations and researchers. It is a valuable resource in the form of empirical evidence.
