This book, which is divided into two parts, presents a solid foundation to wireless technologies and their management. In the beginning, there are eight pages of acronym definitions. That goes to show the heavy usage of acronyms in the wireless industry. Many figures, charts, and algorithms (in pseudocode style) appear in the book. One needs to have a solid understanding of mathematics to understand a large portion of it. Cellular communication, cell geometry, probabilities of call arrival requests, and all metrics are analyzed mathematically and step-by-step details are provided. An understanding of queueing disciplines will help greatly as well. To understand the packet concept, sequences are drawn and all mathematical distributions and corresponding algorithms are given.

Since the book is the author’s labor of love from classroom notes, it makes perfect sense to go through it like a lecture. The areas covered are wide ranging, including mobile operating systems (OSs), wireless local area networks (LANs), the global system for mobile communications (GSM), general packet radio service (GPRS), Bluetooth, infrared, Zigbee, routing protocols, and so on. Unfortunately, mobile OSs like Android and Apple iOS are covered only very briefly.

In general, the book includes the state of art as of 2016-2017; with the advent of new technologies like 5G and newer Wi-Fi protocols, the book will need continuous revisions or could soon be dated. Overall, for anyone interested in doing research or working in the mobile industry, this is a very well-written reference textbook.
