Evolution or revolution: the critical need in genetic algorithm based testing
Surendran A., Samuel P. Artificial Intelligence Review48 (3):349-395,2017.Type:Article
Date Reviewed: Dec 1 2017

Software testing consumes a considerable amount of the cost and time of software development, but it is one of the most crucial phases; it cannot be skipped. Software testing is therefore referred to as “a necessary evil.” In the past two decades, many research papers highlighting the use of metaheuristic techniques like genetic algorithms (GA) for automating software testing have been published. Despite several attempts at automating the testing phase, it remains human-dependent and consumes a lot of time and effort.

This paper presents a systematic review of the research involving the use of GA for automating the software testing phase. It begins by highlighting the importance of software testing, the importance of automating this phase, and the use of GA-based testing. The authors have formulated six research questions, and they have also nicely answered all of the questions later in the paper after a meticulous review of the literature. Difficulties faced in the real-time implementation of GA-based software testing are also clearly mentioned.

The authors conclude that the quality of the solution obtained in software testing using GA depends on parameters like the type of GA used, the fitness function design, the population initialization, and other parameter settings.

The paper is recommended for researchers and practitioners working in the field of GA-based software testing.
