Encyclopedia of applied and computational mathematics
Engquist B., Springer International Publishing, New York, NY, 2016. 1564 pp. Type: Book (978-3-662528-72-3)

Encyclopedia of applied and computational mathematics (EACM) is a comprehensive reference work covering the vast field of applied and computational mathematics. The emphasis on computation reflects growing trends in the area. Areas like physics, chemistry, biology, and computer science, as well as specific fields like atmospheric ocean science, are emphasized in the book; modern engineering and technology are also key components. The book itself is structured in a fine way with a good template for all topics. Synonyms and a short description start off the topic. Later, detailed descriptions and adjoining areas are described. The graphs and diagrams are in colored fonts and very well captured, making reading a pleasure. There are many helpful references. As this is an encyclopedia, there are no problems or questions to provoke the reader to explore further research; rather, this is an addendum to refer to advanced topics.

The book covers wide-ranging topics: calculus areas like advanced differentiation and integration, numerical analysis, statistics, discrete mathematics, operation theories, and number theories. It applies to many areas, such as biomedical informatics and neuroinformatics. All the areas are covered with theorems and proofs. I found some notable omissions, including advanced theories like Primality, which has applications in cryptography. AKS Primality tests are notably absent. As this is an encyclopedia and comes in two volumes, I expected a detailed assessment of a topic like Primality. But this shows the vastness of the EACM; even a book of this stature could not cover everything. Overall, this is a fantastic book and a great boon to researchers in mathematics and those who want to apply the principles to other cross-sectional areas.
