Clark D., Apress, New York, NY, 2017. 348 pp. Type: Book (978-1-484225-76-9)
Date Reviewed: Aug 14 2017

The goal of this book is to expose readers to the various tools in Microsoft’s self-service BI stack, built over Excel 2016, comprising Power Pivot, Power BI Desktop, Power Query, and DAX to enable them to analyze and gain insight into their data. This book can be taken as a companion book for the Microsoft documentation. It informs the reader about various facets of the tool’s usage and illustrates several recommended techniques. The term BI has been used to mean data analysis using pivot tables in Excel.

The book is divided into two parts. The first part comprises eight chapters dealing with building data models in Power Pivot, a tool that enables Excel users to use pivot tables with ease. The first chapter introduces Power Pivot, and the second is on techniques for importing data from different sources into Power Pivot. The next chapter informs readers about techniques for transforming, cleansing, filtering, merging, shaping, grouping, and aggregating data, as well as creating calculated columns. Chapters 4, 5, and 6 introduce data models, DAX, and DAX measures, followed by two chapters on time intelligence and data analysis with pivot tables and charts.

Part 2, in five chapters, deals with building reports and dashboards using Power BI. The last chapter gives examples in geospatial analysis, row-based security, and templates and content packs.

The book is easy to read and use because of its lucid style. It should interest Excel users looking to enhance their data analysis skills.
