Mathematical analysis and the mathematics of computation
Römisch W., Zeugmann T., Springer International Publishing, New York, NY, 2016. 703 pp. Type: Book (978-3-319427-53-9)
Date Reviewed: Jun 23 2017

Römisch and Zeugmann’s Mathematical analysis and the mathematics of computation is a lucid introductory textbook that unites mathematical analysis with the mathematics of computation in a single volume. The strength of the book lies in building the concepts of modern mathematical analysis in a novel way, and then connecting the same to their numerous computational applications. Given that a student who is good on the analytic side of mathematics may not be equally sound on its computational aspects, and vice versa, I greatly appreciate the authors’ painstaking effort in unifying these two different though related fields of modern mathematics.

The book has blossomed largely through the authors’ lectures and seminars at Humboldt University (Germany). The topics covered in the 13 chapters of the book include, but are not limited to, sets, metric spaces, linear normed spaces and linear operators, differential calculus and its applications, integral calculus, inner product spaces, approximate representation of functions, ordinary differential equations and their numerical solutions, and discretization of operator equations.

Although the book is a bit long, its length only determines the breadth of the topics addressed. It has many exercises and additional problems in each chapter to enhance the problem-solving ability of the student. This is followed by a helpful reference and subject index. The target readership includes undergraduate and graduate students of mathematics, computing, and related fields such as engineering. It should also serve as useful reference material for others, given the continuous progress in this field.
