Evolution of broadcast content distribution
Beutler R., Springer International Publishing, New York, NY, 2016. 132 pp. Type: Book (978-3-319459-72-1)
Date Reviewed: May 25 2017

In approximately 125 pages, the author discusses the unfolding broadcast distribution ecosystem. Anyone concerned with how to distribute content with new networks, regulations, consumer expectations, and technologies will want this information. The book provides an excellent starting point to understand the content distribution universe.

As one might suppose, the book contains chapters that address distribution options and technology developments, as well as the regulatory environment. These are well done. There are more regulatory organizations in the global environment than the casual observer might suppose. In a quick and easily followed discussion, these are reviewed. An overview of the global regulatory environment--European, Asian, and American--is provided.

Of particular importance are the chapters that review changing habits and expectations, and strategic considerations. Time-shifting and nonlinear services move content control from the creator to the user. Users become active in creating a personal experience. To most effectively reach the target audience, the traditional website must be augmented with Facebook and Twitter. Internet usage environments make customization easier. Strategy requires one to review usage patterns, consider the value chain, and determine the business arrangements and distribution options.

The writing style is easily comprehended and quick and to the point. No special expertise is required. Figures and tables are inserted where appropriate. A bibliography and comprehensive index provide useful tools for the reader. As this presentation illustrates, no longer can one build content and users will search for it and come. How to bring content to the user is a significant issue in the contemporary environment. The book provides an important and timely introduction to an easily overlooked but important issue.
